"Involved in the development process from the very start"

Even as a student, Julia Tümmers was fascinated by large diesel and gas engines. Now, at the age of 28, she is a Technical Project Manager responsible for her own engine project at MAN Diesel and Turbo SE in Augsburg.

How did you succeed in getting a job at MAN?

It was a conventional route for me: as a student I did an internship with MAN, and later I wrote my graduate thesis here. Then the chance came up to do the MAN Graduate Trainee Program that lasts 15 months. During that period, I was able to get to know a lot of people and different departments at MAN and build up a strong network of connections. I noticed how diverse the company is, and I found that very appealing. For example, the preliminary development and development of big engines goes on at this site, but we also have the testing station and production facility here.

Apart from the company's diversity, what appealed to you in particular?

The product! Even as a student, I was fascinated by big diesel and gas engines for ships and power plants, as opposed to the small engines used in the automotive industry. That's one of the reasons I chose MAN Diesel & Turbo.

What are you working on at the moment?

After a year in the construction department, I got the chance to take on an engine project of my own, as Technical Project Manager. It's an engine that can run on both liquid and gas fuels, and is suitable for marine and power plant applications. With diesel and heavy oil engines, you have to incorporate exhaust gas aftertreatment systems to filter out pollutants, but our engine already meets the latest emissions standards, like the ones for the North Sea and Baltic coasts. The engine is currently undergoing trials. The first engines are being constructed for customers. It's an exciting process to be involved in, as we find out whether the engine can actually do everything we planned for in the development phase, find out whether we can achieve the levels of performance and threshold values demanded by the market and by the targets we set ourselves – or discover that the engine is even better than expected!

What is your role as Technical Project Manager, and what do you like about it?

I coordinate the overall project and am responsible for the budget for the engine for the whole schedule. It's my job to steer the project in the right direction so that we meet the targets set. This involves me in all areas of the value chain, not just one part of the development work. I manage the entire process from the moment the designers draw their first lines through to assembly and testing, and building the first customer engine.

Who would MAN suit as an employer?

All kinds of people: there are so many different jobs and departments at MAN, from development and production through to sales. There's something here for everyone! There are almost unlimited opportunities at MAN. And as we are now owned by VW there are also Group-wide opportunities for development.

Be natural, honest and open! You get a much better response from people if they recognize that you are genuine.
