stips@MAN – Deutschlandstipendium scholarship students step things up a gear

Around 40 recipients of the Deutschlandstipendium scholarship at the Technical University of Munich have been given an insight into the commercial vehicle sector by their sponsor MAN Truck & Bus.

It is now the fifth time that MAN Truck & Bus has invited the students it sponsors to a Campus Day at the company's site in Karlsfeld in Munich. "MAN wants to identify and support the talent of the future at an early stage. We therefore actively look to engage with talented young people such as the recipients of the Deutschlandstipendium, who not only have outstanding academic achievements but are also engaged with society and social causes," explains Yvonne Benkert, Head of HR Innovation 4.0 at MAN Truck & Bus, whose role encompasses the topics of supporting talent and the reputation as an employer.

A journey through the world of MAN

There was a diverse programme awaiting the 40 or so participants from the courses in mechanical engineering, electrical and vehicle engineering, informatics, mechatronics, business management and industrial engineering. This included Frank Tinschert, Vice President for Telematics & Digital Solutions, showing them which challenges are faced by commercial vehicle customers and what answers MAN can offer for these. Then it was a matter of seeing things first hand, with a factory tour and a test drive at the wheel of a truck on the company's test track. In addition, employees from the specialist departments and HR team at MAN gave the students practical tips for when they start their careers after their studies.

The impressions of one student

Georgios Lionas is currently undertaking an internship at MAN Truck & Bus as part of the scholarship programme: "It is a really fascinating experience to work in such a large company and to be involved in creating the products," said the student from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at TUM who is specialising in control and automation technology. "The Deutschlandstipendium has given me the chance to gain valuable insights into a huge company and to develop my technical and personal skills. I am very grateful for that!"

Sponsorship provides prospects

The Deutschlandstipendium is an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and awards funding to students based on achievement and ability. The institutes of higher education select the scholarship recipients on the basis of grades and academic achievements, as well social engagement. Across Germany, 22,500 students (figure for 2014) receive support through the Deutschlandstipendium.
